Diapers are an unavoidable cost that you will have to contend with while you have a little one so the question is does it make more financial sense to invest in cloth diapers or to spend your money on disposables?
Babies need about 8-12 changes a day for their first 12 months. As baby gets bigger and their bladder gets bigger, the amount they need to be changed decreases to about 6-8 times a day from about 1 to 2 years. Depending on when potty training becomes successful, you can still expect 4-6 changes a day during their training phase or the 2nd to 3rd year.
Let’s do the math!
8 to 12 changes per day x 365 days = 2,920 to 4,380 for the first 12 months.
6 to 8 changes per day x 365 days = 2,190 to 2,920 during 1 to 2 yrs.
4 to 6 changes per day x 265 days = 1,460 to 2,190 during 2 to 3 yrs.
If You Are Using Disposables*:
2,920 to 4,380 x $0.30 per diaper = $876 to $1,314 for the first 12 months!
2,190 to 2,920 x $0.30 per diaper = $657 to $876 during 1 yrs. to 2 yrs.!
1,460 to 2,190 x $0.30 per diaper = $438 to $657 during 2 yrs. to 3 yrs.!
*We checked the prices of the most popular brands of diapers from Walmart, Costco, and Superstore and the cost ranges from about $0.21-$0.55 per diaper (not including taxes) as of July 2016. We used a mid-range figure to estimate cost.
You can expect to spend about $1,900 to $2,850 on disposable diapers before tax is included!
For ONE child! And keep in mind that all of those diapers are going into our landfills!
If You Are Using Cloth**:
24 cloth diapers x $25 = $600
**There are a variety of cloth diapering methods (all-in-one, pocket, cover and an insert or prefold) and materials (microfleece, organic cotton, bamboo, etc.) that effect pricing. Prices vary from about $15.99-$34.95 per diaper (not including taxes) as of July 2016. We used a mid-range figure to estimate cost.
